In a resounding display of teamwork and skill, the People’s Republic of China clinched their third World title in the women’s 4x200m freestyle relay, marking their triumphant return to the top since 2009. Led by the formidable quartet of Ai Yanhan, Gong Zhenqi, Li Bingjie, and Yang Peiqi, Team China delivered a masterful performance, clocking in at an impressive 7:47.26.

Reflecting on their stunning victory, Li Bingjie shared her astonishment, remarking, “I thought about getting a good result but didn’t expect to be this good.”

The team’s meticulous planning and unity were evident as they executed their race strategy flawlessly.

Li emphasized the significance of the relay win, stating, “This time, the relay shows how united and strong our team can be. That’s why I believe this gold medal is more special than the individual medal. And this medal is a sign that we will do better for the Paris Olympics.”

In the first 200m mark, Erika Fairweather, the first New Zealander to win a world title with victory in the 400m woman’s freestyle, led her quartet into first ahead of Australia and Hungary.

However, after the changeover, Shayna Jack steered Australia into the lead before Great Birtain’s Abbie Wood took over with a 1:56.65 second-leg split as the British quartet led at halfway, with New Zealand in third and 14-year-old Gong Zhenqi handing over to Li a further two places back.

Amidst the intense competition, Li swam in the third leg, powered through like a hurricane, and shaved the water to split at 1:54.59 seconds. She’d withdrawn from the individual final earlier in the night, a move that paid dividends as she tore through the water and handed over to Yang Peiqi with a 1.42secs lead. Her extraordinary effort on the third leg propelled China from fifth to first, showcasing her unwavering determination and selflessness. She took one for the team and she proved it with this stellar performance that gave China another triumphant victory in the relay events.

As the jubilant celebrations echoed through the stadium, it was clear that this victory was not just a triumph for Team China but a testament to the power of perseverance and teamwork.

Swimming may seem to be a lonely, individual sport, but when it comes to relay events, this sport transforms into a team event, and collective brilliance from each individual is very much needed to lead them to victory.

In the words of Ai Yanhan, “I still can’t believe we made it. This is officially the first time all four of us are in the same team to compete for the final. I have been competing for almost 9 years, and this is my first time winning. I had always been a participant, never really a winner.”

With their sights set on future glory, Team China’s victory serves as a beacon of inspiration for aspiring athletes worldwide, proving that anything is possible, in the pursuit of excellence with dedication and unity.
