In the realm of aquatic excellence, one name is poised to rewrite the annals of swimming history: and his name is Pan Zhanle. With the fervor of a dragon, this young Chinese prodigy has set ablaze the waters of Doha, leaving spectators agape and rivals trailing in his wake.
Having flirted with the world record at his home Asian Games in Hangzhou last year, Pan kicked off the first night of the 2024 World Aquatics Championships clocked 46.80 seconds in a stunning leadoff swim in the 4x100m relay, slicing through the water with the grace of a dragon in flight to eclipse the previous mark of 46.86 set by Romania’s David Popovici. This not only secured China’s first-ever gold medal in a men’s relay at the World Championships but, also saw Pan etch his name in the record books, breaking Popovici’s world record by six-hundredths of a second.

After Pan’s stunning start, the Chinese team never looked back, maintaining dominance throughout the race. Ji Xinjie continued the momentum before passing the baton to the 16-year-old Zhang Zhanshuo, who shed away his nervousness and surged forward to give the anchor, Wang Haoyu, an ample lead. Wang seamlessly navigated his way in the water to split 47.47 seconds and touched the wall with an impressive time of 3:11.08 to secure a resounding victory for China.

Team Italy who put up a commendable performance, clinched the silver medal in 3:12.08, while the United States secured the bronze in 3:12.29. While top swimmers opted not to participate in this edition of the World Championships, there is no denying the sheer brilliance of Pan’s display, elevating him to the ranks of swimming’s finest.
Pan certainly can’t hide his excitement. His infectious smile spoke volumes as he shared his feelings in the post-race interview, “It was an incredible time,” he exclaimed, attributing his success to teamwork and unwavering effort.
Despite not feeling at his peak, his focus on securing a podium spot drove him to push harder. “I never expected to break the record at this moment. Actually, I had set my sights on leaving that achievement for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. Now, my goal is to swim even faster.” he recalled.
Pan arrived in Doha with only one silver medal from the 2023 Fukuoka World Championships through the 4x100m Men’s Medley relay. Following Fukuoka, he won three golds at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China. This included a win in the Men’s 100m freestyle event, where he set his previous personal best of 46.97, making him the fifth-fastest man in history– before this brilliant night in Doha.
As the Chinese welcome the Year of the Dragon in 2024, Pan’s triumph in Doha serves as a beacon of inspiration for the Chinese swimming team. His stunning performance has propelled him to new heights of recognition, positioning him as a frontrunner in the aquatic world.
As the world turns its gaze towards Paris 2024, one thing is certain: Pan Zhanle’s legacy is far from complete. Like a dragon awakening from slumber, he continues to soar, leaving a trail of brilliance in his wake.
